    Stichting Humanitas

Stichting Humanitas: from scattered meter data to one clear overview

    The challenge

Humanitas manages a large number of sites, from large residential care centres to small neighbourhood premises. Gas and electricity consumption data was available, but scattered across dozens of connections. This made it difficult to see where most energy was being used, how consumption was changing over the years and where it made sense to start.

    What we did

    • Collected and consolidated meter data from all connections over several years.
    • Adjusted gas consumption for weather conditions to allow fair comparisons between years.
    • Identified the largest energy users across the sites.
    • Analysed hourly data: when is the heating on — at night, during the day and in summer?
    • Produced indicative energy costs for each building, including energy tax and network charges.

    What the analysis revealed

    • A small number of buildings account for most of the consumption. This is where the greatest savings potential lies.
    • At some sites, a notable proportion of gas is used at night. Reducing heating temperatures overnight is a logical first step to investigate.
    • A constant gas baseload remains even in summer, partly for hot water. It is worth reviewing these systems.
    • Gas consumption is falling slightly, but electricity consumption is rising due to electrification. This calls for attention to peak demand and capacity charges, particularly given grid congestion.
    • Because energy tax rates decrease as consumption rises, the areas offering the greatest savings differ by building: mainly supply and network charges for large buildings, and consumption itself for smaller buildings.

    The result

Humanitas now has one clear report covering all sites. The board and facilities department can see at a glance where energy is being used, how consumption is changing and which buildings need attention first. This allows them to make targeted decisions rather than starting everywhere at once.
